Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Clinical Activities

When addressing demolition treatment in surgical oncology in this millenium, it is done considering the support of adequate morphological reconstruction or involved morphofunctional structures, as the goals aim at fully recovering a normal psychological and social state.

The division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery collaborate closely with all the surgical units for the following procedures:
Reconstructive breast surgery both immediate and deferred are performed through the use of prosthetic implants, pedicle flaps (latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis muscle) and microsurgical flaps (rectus abdominis muscle, skin fat flaps from the abdominal region with muscular savings, skin fat flaps from the gluteal region). In collaboration with the "General Surgery A and Breast Units", highly conservative procedures in selected breast cancers cases such as sparing mastectomy of the nipple areola complex and immediate reconstruction with autologous tissue or prosthetic means are carried out. Within this collaboration, post quadrantectomy contouring surgery, and prophylactic surgery (subcutaneous mastectomy with immediate reconstruction) of the breast are performed.

Reconstructive Surgery of the head and neck region: This is executed by a close collaboration between the Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Divisions which deal with the morphofunctional reconstruction of anatomical structures involved by the tumors of this region, through the use of simple or composite microsurgical flaps (reconstruction of the floor of the mouth, tongue, jaw, upper jaw and throat).

Soft tissue surgery: This deals with the surgical treatment of all skin cancers, such as epithelioma, melanoma, skin localizations of other cancers, paying particular attention to craniofacial localization that require complex reconstructions. This type of surgery deals with sarcomas of the extremities through the morphofunctional microsurgical reconstruction of the structures involved, as a part of the collaboration with the Division of General Surgery A.
